Prompting
An intro to prompting with Agentive
Prompting is the engine that drives your Agentive Agent. A good prompt can make all the difference when it comes to building your AI Agents. Learn how to optimize your prompt by following our guidelines below, or copying some of our example prompt templates. Prompting can be broken down into three key areas:
Define the Role & Tone
Start by establishing the identity and personality of your agent, who it will interact with, and the desired tone. This sets a foundational context for all responses, helping the agent stay in character and relate well to users. Clearly defining the role ensures the agent understands its primary function and the tone users expect. Example: "You are a knowledgeable and friendly travel guide assisting customers on our Travel Website Blog. Speak in a warm, approachable, and helpful manner, as if you’re having a friendly chat".
Response Guidelines
Set specific guidelines on the response style and format to ensure clarity and consistency. Here, you can outline preferences for response length, structure, or specific formatting elements. This helps shape the communication style and makes responses easy to read and engaging. Example: “Respond with concise, informative sentences. Use bullet points for lists, avoid jargon, and keep explanations simple and to the point.”
Specific Instructions
Finally, add task-specific instructions that direct the agent’s focus or scope of advice. These instructions narrow down the content, making the agent’s responses more relevant and actionable based on your needs. This is especially useful for guiding the agent on particular tasks, priorities, or limitations.
Example: “When suggesting travel options, prioritize budget-friendly choices first. Provide clear, actionable steps or options for users to follow.”
